The primary challenge for the Johnson County Detention Center was to design a commercial kitchen and laundry facility capable of serving a large population, three times a day, within a high-security environment. The design needed to optimize for workflow efficiency, durability, and safety, while adhering to strict budgetary and regulatory constraints.
We worked in close partnership with Moseley Architects to ensure the foodservice and laundry components were seamlessly integrated into the overall facility design. Our role was to act as the bridge between the architectural vision and the operational realities of the detention center. This involved regular coordination meetings, detailed reviews of the building systems, and a shared commitment to delivering a facility that was both secure and functional.
Our solution was a highly organized and efficient commercial kitchen layout that separated key functions to ensure a safe and orderly workflow. We specified durable, tamper-proof **foodservice equipment** and designed custom-fabricated stainless steel counters to withstand the demanding environment. The laundry facility was designed for high-volume processing with a clear separation between soiled and clean linen, adhering to all health and safety standards.
The final design resulted in a highly functional and secure foodservice operation that has significantly improved efficiency and safety for the detention center staff. The durable equipment and streamlined layout have reduced maintenance costs and improved the facility’s ability to serve its population effectively. The project was delivered on time and within budget, meeting all client objectives.
